Be A Lady
February 22, 2017
She was only just a girl
merely of eight
with pig tails
a light in her eyes
when she first learned of hate.
Me,
she was told.
Smile, be gracious, be dainty, be a lady.
Be perfect for others,
but Me is who you’ll hate.
She grew to a teen
give or take a year
a chance to change
when she first learned of fear.
Me,
she was told.
Quiet, be calm, be polite, be a lady.
Be perfect for others,
but Me is who you’ll fear.
Soon a young miss
full of dreams about
the life ahead of her
when she first learned of doubt.
Me, she was told.
Expose, be pretty, be sexy, be a lady.
Be perfect for others,
but Me is who you’ll doubt.
Me is who I hate,
but smile, she told herself.
Me is who I fear,
keep quiet, she told herself.
Me is who I doubt,
expose, she told herself.
She was perfect for others.
Quite the lady.
The light left her eyes
Merely at eight
Beautiful yet broken
A twisted fate.
